Sustainably Grown Mushrooms: Nurturing Quality and History

July 1, 2023

At Highline Mushrooms, sustainability and quality go hand in hand. We invite you to explore the sustainable farming practices that have defined Highline Mushrooms as a leader in the industry since 1961. Rooted from our rich history, discover how Highline Mushrooms has become a pioneer in the industry while prioritizing environmental stewardship and providing the best quality mushrooms to delight our customers.

Highline Mushrooms has a long history that spans over half a century. Founded by Dr. Murray O’Neil, our company began as a small family-owned mushroom farm in Leamington, Ontario, Canada.   Dr. O’Neil, wanted to grow the healthiest, most flavorful produce in the cleanest possible environment for his family and community. Decades later, the passion for natural nourishment and organic, sustainable growing practices helped drive Highline from simply becoming an organic certified mushroom farm in Leamington, ON to the world’s largest producer of fresh organic mushrooms.

Sustainable Mushroom Farming: Our Pledge To The Environment

“The decisions of today, affect hundreds of families tomorrow,” once said Dr. O’Neil, and that’s why sustainability is at the core of everything we do. Mushrooms are considered one of the most sustainably produced foods in North America and at Highline, we are committed to lead the charge.  We are dedicated to growing sustainably grown mushrooms that not only delight the senses but also minimize our environmental footprint. From organic mushroom production to efficient resource management, we embrace an integrated approach to farming that nurtures the environment while producing high-quality mushrooms. We grow mushrooms that are good for you and good for the environment.

We take pride in our organic mushroom production methods by using organic materials and techniques that are free from synthetic chemicals and pesticides. By embracing natural alternatives for pest control and disease prevention, we create a healthier growing environment while protecting the ecosystems around us.

Mushrooms: The Original Vertical Farm

Resource management is a fundamental aspect of sustainable mushroom farming at Highline Mushrooms. We employ innovative practices to minimize waste and maximize sustainability. Through optimized irrigation systems, water-saving technologies, and waste reduction strategies, we ensure responsible water usage and repurpose by-products, promoting a circular economy in all aspects of our business. We are able to produce one pound of fresh mushrooms using about 6 litres of water, a fraction of what other foods require.

Did you know that mushrooms are the original vertical farms? We can grow millions of pounds of mushrooms on a one-acre farm. With our unique Dutch style indoor growing facilities, we have a smaller footprint compared to other crops. One acre of land can grow over two million lbs of mushrooms a year! Vertical farming maximizes the use of growing rooms and reduces our carbon footprint.
